The Milagro Project
The Milagro Project: A project to awaken compassion for immigrants
What are Milagros?
“Milagro” is the Spanish word for miracle. Milagros are artisanal prayer charms made in Mexico. They come in a variety of shapes to represent prayer concerns, and most people are enchanted by them.
How does the Milagro Project work?
The Milagro Project helps congregations and other organizations to nurture compassion among their participants for immigrants in our midst, regardless of their current legal status. Participating churches order a set of charms. (Charms come attached to a bulb-shaped pin, unless you request a second set of plain charms for crafting.) Participants in the Milagro Project are invited to take a charm (or multiple charms!) and to wear the charm as a sign of support for immigrants.
What do we do with the Milagros?
Milagros are great for use as a children’s sermon, for church school crafts, or as part of an ongoing prayer ministry. (See this page for ideas.) Children love pinning them on sneakers, backpacks, and friendship bracelets. They are great pinned to a prayer shawl or neck warmer, or added onto Alex + Ani style slide bracelets.
Some people in my congregation think we should arrest and deport all undocumented people. Will the project still work at our church?
The Milagro Project is designed to help congregations deepen their compassion for immigrants. For some churches that will mean moving members towards a commitment to the Sanctuary movement. For others, it will be a conversation starter, a way to open minds and hearts, even if just a tiny bit. Holding a sweet little prayer charm in their hands, people begin to realize that a real person in Mexico, a person with hopes and dreams who shares their faith, actually made that charm.
I love the charms but I’m not religious. Can I buy them?
The charms are available to anyone. If you are not part of a non-profit organization you are not eligible to receive a discount, but they are still affordable. Please note that we source them by weight so we cannot sort out the religious ones for individual orders.
I’m religious but not Christian. Can I participate?
Yes, but again because we source the charms by weight, some Christian symbols might be included in the mix. If you let us know that you prefer not to receive crosses we will make an effort to sort them out, but a few might slip through.
