A butterfly is an ancient symbol of resurrection in the Christian tradition. The Butterfly Effect is the idea that something quite small and seemingly unimportant, such as a butterfly flapping its wings, can lead to a cascade of events that eventually have huge consequences.
I've decided to combine these two concepts as a follow-up to my recent Stations of the Cross art project. (Note: I am in the process of checking on the stations and will post a follow-up report within a day or so.)
The Butterfly Effect Project involves the creation and distribution of (at least) fifty butterfly projects in the fifty days between Easter Sunday and Pentecost (a time frame known in traditional Christian circles as The Great Fifty Days.)
For this project, I'm looking for collaborators to SEND ME BUTTERFLIES! I don't mean real live butterflies, of course, but found objects and original photos (meaning, new photos taken by you) that resemble butterflies in terms of shape, color, or both. The butterflies will be incorporated into artwork and sent out into the wider world over the course of the next 50 days. I will photograph each butterfly launch and post to social media, and follow-up as feasible.
As with the Stations of the Cross project I plan to incorporate a "wearable art" element into each piece, though not necessarily a necklace this time.
My plan is to rely as much as possible on giving new life to that which has been rejected and discarded. I was able to create the Stations of the Cross without purchasing anything, but this time I might need to break down and spend a little money.
Sending a photo constitutes permission for me to use the photo, in whole or in part, altered or not, in one or more of the Butterfly Effect Project art pieces. You will be credited in any publications or exhibits for your photo. Any other use of said photo(s) would entail seeking additional further permission from the photographer.
Physical "found object" items can be sent via regular mail. Fragile items should be protected appropriately (e.g., a padded envelope.) Objects will not be returned. Art pieces created from found objects donated may be offered for sale, and donors forfeit any right to any portion of the sales. You will be credited in social media posts authored by me, if you so desire.
